Preface

A SKETCH OF THE LIFE AND ANCESTRY OF THE
WATTS', JONES' AND ECHERDS', OF WHAT IS NOW
ALEXANDER COUNTY, WAS COMPILED FIRST BY
MRS. ANNIE WATTS ECHERD AS FOLLOWS:

Mrs. Annie (Watts) Echerd was born on April 14, 1827 and died Nov.
9, 1915. She was a daughter of James Watts, Jr. and Rebecca Jones.
Her paternal grandparents were the Pioneer James Watts son of (Thomas
Watts) of Chatham Co., N. C., and his wife who was Lurana Teague,
daughter of William Teague and Elinor Teague, who lived In Chatham
Co., N. C. The Watts, Teague and Jones families all came from
Chatham Co. between 1795 and 1800.

The Watts family was Welch descent, while the Teague likely of Irish
descent.

The Jones family was of English descent and the Baskell family was of
French descent, traces their ancestry back to Isaac Bastequet, a staunch
French Hugenot.

On June 20, 1844, Anna Watts became the wife of Franklin Echerd, a son
of George and Elizabeth Rowe Echerd, formerly of Lincoln County, now
Catawba County. Their ancestors were German.

Aunt Anna, as she was better known in her day, lived to be eighty-
eight years, six months and twenty-five ddys and was probably the last one
buried in a home made coffin in Three Forks Cemetery. Another request of
Mrs. Echerd's was that a song be sung at the time of her interment entitled
"Weep Not For Me As You Stand Over My Grave". There was no one who
know the words of the song except her son, William Jefferson Echerd, and
he sang it.

Anna wrote a brochure she called "My Book" of which the writer has a copy.
