VI 2 4 Benjamin Watts, fourth son of Lurana Teague and James
Watts, married Mary E. Dodson, daughter of William
E. Dodson, first Baptist preacher in what is now Alex-
ander Co. Born in 1738, died in 1833. Second wife,
Sarah Meadows. Benjamin Watts was the largest slave
owner in the county, having 26 when the Emancipation
Proclamation was proclaimed. Tradition is that he had
a pot of gold and blindfolded one of his slaves and led
him until he was lost and had him to bury it. It has
never been found as any one knows about. Issue follows:

VI 2 4 Bettie Watts, third daughter of James Watts and Lurana
Teague, married Andrew Steele, son of James Steele.
Settled at the Rufus Brown home place on the Caldwell
Co. line. James had a four horse wagon going west,
stopped to camp and built a fire against a tree that
burned down during the night and killed two of his horses.
Therefore, he had to build a home, as he could not move
a four horse load with two horses. Issue follows:
